How Butterfly Valves Used in Various Industries

Butterfly valves are valves that isolates or regulates the flow of a fluid. They belong to a family of valves known as “quarter turn valves”. The closing mechanism is a disk that rotates.

The disc is connected to an actuator outside the valve with the help of a rod. The valve plate when pivoted at the centre and moved with the help of an actuator, resembles the butterfly wings and therefore they are known as Butterfly valves.

BUTTERFLY VALVES TYPES:

Butterfly valves are basically divided into different types on the basis of pressure and usage.

As per Disc Closure Design

  • Concentric Butterfly Valve
  • Eccentric Butterfly Valves

As per Piping Connection Design

  • Wafer Type Butterfly Valve
  • Lug Type Butterfly Valve
  • Double Flange Butterfly Valve

THEIR ADVANTAGES:

Butterfly valves are similar to ball valves but have several advantages.

  • They are small and, when actuated pneumatically, open and close very quickly.
  • The disc is lighter than a ball, and the valve requires less structural support than a ball valve of comparable diameter.
  • Butterfly valves are very precise, which makes them advantageous in industrial applications.
  • They are quite reliable and require very little maintenance

      THEIR DISADVANTAGES:
  • One disadvantage of butterfly valves is that some portion of the disc is always presented to the flow, even when fully opened.
  • The use of a butterfly valve always results in a pressure switch across the valve, regardless of the setting.

THEIR WORKING:

The Working of butterfly valves is very much similar to that of ball valves. Rotating of the handle, manually or with the help of a pneumatic system, turns the plate either perpendicular or parallel to the flow of the fluid. Butterfly valves can also be used for regulating the flow by adjusting the lever and by keeping a close watch on the desired output flow.

Their Industrial Uses :

General Industry

Butterfly valves are some of the most useful valves used on the market today. They can be used for just about anything, from simple shut off valves in a pipe to refineries. Their simple design, high durability, and low maintenance make them an ideal candidate to regulate fluid flow in any piping system. In the Food Processing sector, standard resilient seated valves are not approved, there are many on the market that are with sanitary connections in and out.

Oil & Gas Industry

Valves are a vital part of any piping system, which means that they play a key role in the oil and gas industry. They can be used to control flow rates, to isolate and protect equipment, and guide and direct the refining process of crude oil.

In the harsh environments of remote oil rigs or gas pipelines branching across the frozen tundra and desert, heavy-duty oil and gas valves are absolutely vital in order to withstand the hostile environments and aggressive media involved.

Simple to operate and quick to open, butterfly valves are generally equipped with a gearbox and a handwheel connected to the stem. Not only are they lightweight and easy to use, but butterfly valves can also be sourced in large sizes and cope admirably with high-pressure recovery and low-pressure drop.

Butterfly valve suppliers need to deliver a high degree of reliability and durability to ensure minimal maintenance and long service life in oil and gas applications. They require specialised materials capable of handling aggressive medium and withstanding the extreme demands of explosive environments and saline offshore conditions. Butterfly valves for oil and gas applications therefore need to be rugged, heavy-duty and fit for purpose.

Marine Industry

Pumps and valves in the shipbuilding industry are employed on the high seas in a wide variety of complex applications. It is crucial that these pumps and valves can withstand harsh conditions. They must ensure the reliability and availability of on-board processes at all times. Butterfly valves are used on all types of ships and firefighting apparatus. They are also widely used for domestic piping purposes.

On ships they are used for large capacity lines such as forward and aft sea water suction lines or lines from various tanks to their respective pumps. Lube oil pipelines also preferably have butterfly valves fitted in them due to obvious reasons as discussed above.
